Expanding the Circle:
Respecting the Past, Preparing for the Future

Settings for Implementation

Schools using the ETC curriculum often implement it in the following settings:

  1. Summer program (generally 5 days as a residential program held in
    a college setting)
  2. College course for credit (offered as an elective in a college setting)
  3. Weekend college course for credit and/or stipend (generally offered in
    the college setting)
  4. High school course for college and/or college credit (a high school course
    offered in the high school, taught by a high school teacher with supervision from college faculty for college credit

The table below provides “pros” and “cons” to implementing the ETC curriculum in various settings.

Competition with other area youth summer programs

Year-round Programs Offered on a weekly basis/1 hour sessions;
Trimester and/or quarter sessions
Consistent way to infuse within the existing school schedule Student may lack understanding of the importance of the course content (they don’t choose the course, but may be “placed” in it)
College in the Schools Taught in high school for college credit Gain college credit while still in high school;
Prepare and plan for appropriate choices
Coordination and support from a college may be difficult
Freshman-Year Experiences Taught as pre-college entrance or first semester in college Learn essential skills at key time when needed; easier for students to implement Unless required, students often will not come on campus early for the pre-college course or take the course
Transition Conferences

Single day event

Exposure to multiple transition activities in a short time Requires extensive organization and support
Weekend Retreats Two or three day intensive Students do not miss school class time;
Allows for more reflection than single day events
Requires well qualified staff, appropriate sites, equipment, release forms
